I think I see a blower laying on the ground shortly after the explosion and blower explosions aren't rare in drag cars so that's what I'm thinking, but you may be right. Hell, he could have both.

It looks like a diesel, so it has compression and boost in spades.

these sled puller diesel engines can run over 100 psi of boost plus nitrous and maybe propane injection. multiple turbos compounded. This block may have been fatigued or just not able to handle what it was getting put through. Check out the diesel drag racers that just create there own cummins blocks out of aluminum and steel sleeves. badass shit.
